Frontiers of Academics and Industry

SVM has been conducting scientific research work targeted at international frontier, national strategy and national defense demands. SVM focuses on the three major scientific research directions of advanced powertrain, intelligence and safety and conducts fruitful research work in such aspects as energy conservation and new energy vehicle, intelligent vehicles and transportation systems, advanced engine and turbo power systems, vehicle dynamics and control, vehicle design and vehicle safety, automotive industry and system engineering

SVM has established 7 Joint Research Centers with well-known enterprises such as Toyota, Daimler, Nissan, Shell, etc.

With focus on the two major technological revolutions on “new energy and intelligent vehicle”, SVM has been leading technological development of new energy vehicle and intelligent and connected vehicle. It owns the state-level international S&T cooperation base “US-China CERC-CVC” and takes the lead in international cooperation on new energy vehicle. It leads the formulation of the national technology roadmap for new energy vehicle and intelligent and connected vehicle development during the “13^th Five-Year Plan” period, coordinates and organizes the planning of new energy vehicle, intelligent and connected vehicle and integrated traffic by the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, and leads industry development in a constant manner.

HOW TO APPLY

SVM provides master's and doctoral programs for international students, among which two master programs are offered fully in English, while others are offered fully in Chinese or bilingually in Chinese and English.

Required Qualification of Applicants

 Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens with a valid passport.

 Master's degree program applicants should have a Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent degree to a Bachelor's degree (or above) in China. Doctoral degree program applicants should have a Master’s degree or an equivalent degree to a Master’s degree (or above) in China.

 SVM also accepts bachelor degree holders to pursue doctoral degrees. Bachelor degree holders for doctoral program application must meet all the uniform requirements of the university, as well as the requirements of SVM listed below:

²  The Minimum Requirement of Undergraduate GPA or Average scores:3.5/4 or B+ or 85/100；

²  Applicants of SVM can be exempt from the HSK certificates, however, non-native English Speakers must meet the minimum English proficiency requirement: TOEFL:90/IELTS:6.5.

Application Schedule: 8:00 AM, November 1, 2019—— 17:00 PM, February 28, 2020

The winter break of THU will be from Jan 16,2020 to Feb 12,2020. The application system will still be available during the winter break, but online verification might be delayed due to the vacation. Applicants are therefore recommended to complete their application at least two or three weeks in advance.

Application Documents

 Applicants should complete an Online Application on the website of the THU Graduate Programs Application System for International Students (http://gradadmission.tsinghua.edu.cn) during the designated application period. Applicants should fill in the application information online, upload the application documents listed below, and pay the application fee at the time of submission.

²  Personal statement. Master's degree program applicants should submit a Personal Statement. Doctoral degree program applicants should submit both a Personal Statement and a brief introduction of their research experience.

²  Degree certificate. Master's degree program applicants should submit their Bachelor's degree certificate. Doctoral degree program applicants should submit both their Master's and Bachelor's degree certificates. Applicants who will not graduate before the application deadline must provide a pre-graduation certificate from their current academic institution. In this case, the degree certificate must be submitted before registration.

²  Academic transcript. Master's degree program applicants should submit the academic transcript of their undergraduate study. Doctoral degree program applicants should submit academic transcripts of both their graduate and undergraduate studies. Applicants who will not graduate before the application deadline must provide their current academic transcript. In this case, the completed academic transcript must be submitted before registration.

²  Language proficiency certificate: HSK band 4—with a score of 195 or above for Chinese program. Applicants whose native language is Chinese or whose university study is conducted in Chinese can be exempted from the requirement to submit an HSK score report. TOEFL (90) or IELTS (6.5) for English programs. Applicants whose native language is English or whose university study is conducted in English can be exempted from the requirement to submit the English language proficiency test scores.

²  Two academic recommendation letters from scholars who have the title of associate professor or higher, or senior professionals in a related academic field. Please follow the instructions on the online system for submission of online recommendation letters or upload the recommendation letters signed by references.

²  Passport personal information page (personal and ordinary passport).

Evaluation and Admission

THU admits students based on evaluation of their application documents together with a further matriculation examination. The admission committee of SVM will review the application documents and select applicants for further examination. The examination will take the form of Personal Interview. If an interview is required for admission, SVM will contact the applicant directly to arrange an interview appointment and provide information about the interview process.

Admission to graduate programs is determined at school level with oversight by Tsinghua University according to the result of the document review, the interview, and other factors. A Certificate of Admission will be issued by THU Graduate Admissions Office after the final admission result is released. Prior to this, applicants may check their admission status via the THU Graduate Programs Application System for International Students.

Scholarships

Tsinghua University mainly offers two kinds of scholarships to prospective full-time international graduate students: Full Scholarship and Tuition Scholarship.

 The Full Scholarships, e.g. Chinese Government Scholarship, usually cover tuition, stipend, on-campus accommodation, and medical insurance. Annual Review is strictly required. The Tuition Scholarships cover full or partial tuition fee support with a duration of one academic year. Applicants may apply for Tuition Scholarships annually (competitive).

Accommodation

Due to limited dormitory capacity, dormitory rooms must be applied for online; this is conducted on a first come, first served basis. On-campus rooms can only be reserved for those who successfully apply for a dormitory room online. Those who fail to apply for a dorm online must find off-campus accommodation independently.
